Russell was built for the Porthmadog Beddgelert & South Snowdon Railway in 1906.
When Russell was derived, the company had not completed any of its line, so Russell was delivered to Dinas, to work on its sister companies line until completion. As events turned out, the company never completed any of its line, and Russell would not progress to Beddgelert & Porthmadog until the line was completed by the Welsh Highland Railway in 1922.
